For most of my career and life I have had an abundance model, freely sharing my discoveries, what I have developed and produced. This seems to fit quite well with the model of Open Educational Resources. I have also been encouraged to share what I am developing and creating, licensing it through Creative Commons. I understand that this will act as publicity material for myself and my expertise and that people will then be more willing to hire me based on what I have shared with the world.
Following this logic, I would be remunerated then for my expertise on an hourly or project basis, which is a very different concept to licensing or selling what I have originally created thereby accumulating passive or residual income.
Many people who encourage giving away their material in the educational field are receiving a salary while they develop materials that they share, while I am self employed. While this concept greatly appeals to me, I am very curious about how to create a sustainable business model that incorporates Creative Commons Licensing while helping me feed my family.
This is the "lynchpin" for me that is part of a much larger question, how should artists and creative producers be compensated for their brilliance and encouraged to continue in this age where everything "should" be free.
